Conflict Coaching and Mediation

Conflict coaching is a one-on-one process in which a trained coach helps an individual develop their skills and strategies to effectively manage or resolve a conflict. It’s typically used when someone is facing a difficult or ongoing conflict and wants guidance on how to approach it, whether in the workplace, personal life, or other settings. The goal is to empower the individual to handle the situation more confidently and constructively.

Key aspects of conflict coaching include:

Perspective-taking: Encouraging the individual to understand the other party’s viewpoint and explore mutually beneficial solutions.

Self-awareness: Helping the individual understand their own responses to conflict, emotional triggers, and communication style.

Skill-building: Teaching effective communication, negotiation, and problem-solving techniques. Skills taught may be used to prepare client for mediation.

Action Planning: Identifying desired outcomes and developing a plan to address the conflict.

Mediation is a structured and voluntary process where a neutral third party, called a mediator, facilitates constructive dialogue, encourages mutual understanding, and guides the participants toward finding a voluntary, mutually agreeable solution. Unlike in court or arbitration, the mediator does not impose a decision but instead helps the parties reach their own agreement. The mediator encourages open communication, helping both sides understand each other’s positions, needs, and concerns.

Oftentimes, parties may choose to begin with 1:1 conflict coaching in preparation for mediation.
